CHB moves to withdraw Sector 53 housing scheme for the third time
Despite 7,468 applications for 372 flats, the Chandigarh Housing Board is set to drop the scheme and look at other uses for the land.

- Board of Directors to take the final call on 9 July 2026
- Demand survey drew 7,468 applications for 372 flats
- Scheme was first scrapped in 2018, revived in November 2024
- Administrator asked CHB to study group housing sites or other Master Plan uses for the 9-acre land
The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) is preparing to withdraw its general housing scheme in Sector 53 for the third time. The final decision was expected from the board's Board of Directors on 9 July 2026.
The move comes despite strong demand. A demand survey for the scheme received 7,468 applications for only 372 flats, roughly 20 applicants for every flat on offer.
The scheme has a long history of reversals. It was first scrapped in 2018 after too few applications, revived in November 2024, and then put on hold again after directions from the UT Administrator in September 2025.
What next for the land
The Administrator has asked for the 9-acre Sector 53 land to be studied for conversion into group housing sites or other uses permitted under the Master Plan, to improve financial feasibility.
